What Is Local SEO?

Local SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of optimising your online presence so that people in your local area can find your business when they search on Google.

Think about the last time you searched for something like "plumber near me" or "hairdresser Alloa" - the businesses that appeared at the top of those results didn't get there by accident. They got there because someone invested time and effort into their local SEO.

Why It Matters for Small Businesses

The numbers are stark. Over 46% of all Google searches have local intent - meaning people are looking for something nearby. And 76% of people who search for something nearby visit a business within a day.

If you're not showing up, those customers are going to your competitors. Want to see how we helped a real business turn this around? See how we helped a local business rank higher.

The Three Pillars of Local SEO

1. Your [Google Business Profile](/services/google-profile-management)

This is arguably the most important single thing you can do. A fully optimised, verified Google Business Profile puts you on Google Maps and in the "local pack" - the three businesses shown at the top of local search results. I also wrote a detailed guide on 7 Google Business Profile mistakes you might be making.

2. On-Page Optimisation

Your website needs to tell Google clearly who you are, where you are, and what you do. That means having your location mentioned naturally throughout your content, proper page titles, and structured data markup. If your website isn't converting visitors, this is often the root cause.

3. Local Citations

Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on other websites - directories like Yell, Yelp, and industry-specific listings. Consistency is key here; if your address is slightly different on each site, Google loses confidence in your data.
